February 10–12, 2010
Westin Hotel, Ottawa
Join over 600 of your peers from across the country at the premier municipal conference on sustainable community development. Our 2010 theme — Growing the Green Economy: Practical Solutions for Sustainable Communities — is particularly relevant to municipal concerns about revitalizing local economies and job creation. You will learn what practical steps you can take to green your economy, and share perspectives with others interested in moving toward a more sustainable future.
Growing a green economy is ripe with possibility: from identifying local sources of energy and turning neglected lands into thriving neighbourhoods, to providing attractive alternatives to driving such as transit and more walkable communities.
The conference will provide practical, interactive and capacity building workshops that will give you the opportunity to understand the issues, hear from your peers and from subject-matter experts, and apply what you learn to your own community. The SCC will offer ideas and strategies that will enable you to find ways to make your organization more efficient and generate savings from municipal operations. Resources will be offered as take-away toolkits for delegates to champion municipal sustainability issues when they return home after the conference.
The SCC will feature a variety of sessions including interactive workshops, sustainability clinics, debates and inspirational keynote speakers based on the following sub-themes:
- Wednesday, February 10:
Partnering to Deliver Community Sustainability
- Thursday, February 11:
Economics of Climate Change: Protecting the Climate and Reaping the Rewards
- Friday, February 12:
Building and Measuring Resilient Communities: Reinventing our Local Economy
Confirmed keynote speakers include:
- Mayor David Miller, City of Toronto
- Bob Willard, international business expert on sustainability and author of The Sustainability Advantage
- Avi Friedman, green architect, professor and columnist
- Stephen Guibeault, deputy director, Équiterre
