Canada is a very big place, with a big interest in creating more sustainable communities. Large, medium and small; urban, suburban, rural and remote; in every region of the country, municipalities are taking up the challenge of sustainability and looking to FCM for leadership. In order to keep up with the pace of demand for GMF services across the country FCM is testing new and innovative approaches to service delivery.
CSCD is experimenting with delivering parts of the GMF Capacity Building program through Regional Facilitators. The pilot program was announced in late 2006 and began operating in Fall 2007. In the last year, it has generated a tremendous amount of interest from municipal governments across the country
Regional Facilitators increase FCM’s ability to deliver programs and services, knowledge and resources to municipal governments in an effort to help them move towards sustainability. They will also keep FCM informed of local issues and emerging opportunities within their respective regions of the country by providing feedback to FCM on sustainable development issues that local municipal governments are addressing.
In this initial pilot phase, three Regional Facilitators have been contracted to work in Saskatchewan, the Yukon and Quebec. They are Jeff Hryhoriw and Andrew Rathwell of Zapwell Communications (Saskatchewan); David Black, a consultant with the Association of Yukon Communities (Yukon); and Christian Savard and Thomas Duchaine with Vivre en Ville (Quebec).
They can each be contacted through Carmen Bohn, manager of the GMF Capacity Building program at 613-907-6327.
