Capacity
building: the national tour

CSCD’s Capacity Building team has been busy. They have been out on the road gathering feedback from municipal governments across Canada on the resources they need to help them achieve their sustainable development goals.

CSCD has capacity building campaigns in six sectors: brownfields, energy, planning, transportation, waste and water.

The Capacity Building team has met with over 200 municipalities at 13 consultation workshops. They have held workshops in Moncton, Sudbury, Sherbrooke, Edmonton, Yellowknife, Vancouver, Victoria, Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa.

The purpose of the workshops was to explore:

  • what municipal governments want the Capacity Building program to focus on
  • how best to engage municipal governments in the program
  • priority issues within each campaign sector
  • sustainable development resources and tools needed by municipal governments
  • feedback on the process CSCD is following to develop the campaigns

CSCD also conducted online surveys and telephone interviews to get more detailed feedback, especially for those who were unable to make it out to the workshops. They focused on existing assets within municipal government and what might be needed to achieve even greater action on municipal sustainable development.

So what feedback was heard?

  • Design and deliver sustainability workshops and "how-to" sessions.
  • Offer tools to promote a systems approach and better integration within municipal government departments.
  • Develop a domestic Community Energy Mission.
  • Develop communications tools aimed at building awareness at different levels, such as the public, elected officials and municipal staff.
  • Support municipalities to conduct peer-to-peer training.

…and so much more. A summary report will be sent to workshop participants and CSCD subscribers in the coming weeks and will be used by CSCD staff to inform the development of the Capacity Building program. For more information about the workshops and surveys, please contact
Carmen Bohn or Amy Seabrooke.
