Infrastructure Choices for Sustainable Community Development

Infrastructure Choices for Sustainable Community Development” is an Infrastructure Canada supported research project conducted by Royal Roads University (Victoria, BC). It includes case studies of leading examples of sustainable municipal infrastructure projects as well as an Integrated Community Sustainability Planning Tool.

Guide for Local Agenda 21

The definition of the Agenda 21 has evolved since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, and thanks to a number of ongoing initiatives, it is now recognized as providing an integrated planning tool for viable sustainable development as well as a strategic framework for action.

The gateway created by the Université de Québec is unique: it is a collective work in the form of an accessible, evolving multimedia guide, intended to support local implementation of Agenda 21 as well as strategic and joint action plans for regional sustainable development.

AUMA – Municipal Sustainability Planning Guide

The Alberta Association of Urban Municipalities’ Municipal Sustainability Planning website includes a wealth of resources that help municipalities to look long-term at the communities they want and take proactive steps to move there.

It includes a e-learning course on sustainability and a five-phase comprehensive municipal sustainability planning guide.

AAMDC ICSP toolkit

The Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) has developed an interactive toolkit to assist municipalities in completing their ICSPs. Municipalities are able to use this toolkit to meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Government of Canada or they can go into more detailed planning for each area of sustainability - environmental, economic, social and cultural.

ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments and national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. More than 470 cities, towns, counties, and their associations worldwide comprise ICLEI's growing membership. ICLEI works with these and hundreds of other local governments through international performance-based, results-oriented campaigns and programs.

ICLEI provides technical consulting, training, and information services to build capacity, share knowledge, and support local government in the implementation of sustainable development at the local level.
