Municipalities are Engaged in Green Building Development
FCM and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) are partnering to deliver a national
series of workshops on green building development. The Municipal Green Building Policy Development workshops are intended to train municipal staff from all departments on the benefits of energy and water efficient buildings.
Workshops have already been delivered in Vancouver, Halifax, St John’s and Hamilton.
The recent Green Building Policy Workshop provided an excellent opportunity for us to bring Together over 30 staff from 8 different departments with key roles around the design construction maintenance and use of our building stock. The presentations and take away materials were excellent and the workshop also facilitated some great discussion and interaction – Stephen King, Halifax Regional Municipality.
Keen interest in the subject also appeared in St John’s where 25 participants attended to learn about the business case for green buildings, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) rating system and case studies from the public and private sector. Active group discussions on barriers and opportunities for green municipal buildings kept the audience talking and generating ideas on how they can implement green building practices in their own municipality. On the west coast, another 35 eager participants came out to an advanced workshop on moving from policy to practice with green buildings.
One last workshop will be delivered in English and French, in Quebec City on May 29. It will be preceded by the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators annual conference and followed by
FCM's 71st Annual Conference and Municipal Expo™. This is an excellent opportunity to get council members and senior managers engaged in green buildings.
It is not too late for you to attend one of these valuable workshops.
